Hi, I’m Peyton Heisch, and I’m proud to be the Sustainability Manager at Augustana College. While the title may sound straightforward, my role involves managing the sustainability of two incredible community-based research centers: The Upper Mississippi Center and The Center for the Advancement of Community Health and Wellness.

When I reflect on my journey, I realize just how much my education has shaped me. I pursued a major in Environmental Studies and minored in Sociology/Anthropology. Little did I know that my academic journey would lead me back to Augustana, this time as a staff member.
Looking back, I can say with certainty that I wouldn’t be where I am today without the incredible mentors and colleagues who helped me along the way.
Dr. Lashley, my advisor and research mentor, was there for me through every step, providing not only academic guidance but also shaping the way I approach research and problem-solving. Her influence was more than academic—it was transformative.
Dr. Reisner played a pivotal role in encouraging me to pursue my master’s degree, recognizing the potential I hadn’t yet fully seen in myself. His belief in me gave me the push I needed to take that crucial next step in my career.
The support I’ve received from the Hanson team, especially the Environmental Studies faculty, has been immeasurable. These colleagues have not only inspired me but have also become lifelong inspirations to me.
My co-workers who are not professors, but lab techs, Admins, and custodians have also been an influential part of my personal support system, always there to lend advice, guidance, and friendship. And last, but not least the continued support of my career coach and friend Sumita Amrik. She was by my side throughout all of the applications leading up to my grad school decision.
I’ll admit, there was a time when I wasn’t ready for the next step. As a senior two years ago, I knew there was still much to learn and grow from. But two years later, I feel fully equipped to take on the challenges of a graduate program. My journey has been one of hard work, deep reflection, and the kind of growth that can only come from both learning and doing. With each lesson I’ve learned and skill I’ve honed, I now know that I’m prepared to take on whatever comes next.
As I look ahead, I can’t help but feel immense gratitude for everyone who has been part of my journey. From mentors who guided me to colleagues who supported me, each person has played a vital role in shaping who I am today.
As I continue to grow and take on new challenges—both professionally and academically—I’m excited about what lies ahead. I’m ready to dive into the next chapter with confidence, a sense of purpose, and the knowledge that I’ve had the privilege of learning from some truly remarkable people.
To all who have helped me along the way—thank you. Your support, encouragement, and belief in me have been invaluable. As I prepare for graduate school and new opportunities, I feel more prepared than ever. I’m excited for the future and ready to see where this journey will take me.
