Local Grant Funded Internship Opportunities

Augustana College has received grant funds from the Illinois Board of Higher Education to support local partner organizations to provide paid internships for students whose hometown is in the state of Illinois. The purpose of the Emerging Professionals Grant Program is to provide more opportunities for Illinois resident students to have professional experiences related to their field of study. Grant funds will be used to pay qualified students an hourly wage ($17/hour.) Emerging Professionals internships must be registered for at least 0 credit.

Below are the organizations and opportunities available for Summer 2024. To apply for these positions, follow the link on the title of the position you are interested in:

  • Environmental Health Intern: The student will participate in vector control via weed/grass regulation. This program involves monitoring properties within East Moline for weeds/grass which violates the City ordinance; Investigating complaints regarding weeds/grass; Using iWorQ, a computer program, to log the violations and send out courtesy notices; Completing reinspections of those properties who were documented as in violation; Communicating with the contract mowers to mow the properties in violation, sending invoices and possibly filing liens if necessary. Possible other duties include: Inspecting temporary food stands; Observing routine food inspections; Observing property maintenance investigations
  • Civil/Construction Engineering Intern: Assist Engineering Construction Manager with construction observation, administration, and related work; Reading & review of engineering plans, survey plats and tax maps; Collect field survey data with city’s GPS unit, tape measure, etc.; Use of Microsoft Office products for data manipulation and presentation; Perform administrative tasks such as organizing, filing, pick-up/delivering and other tasks as directed.
  • Stormwater Management Intern: Assist Stormwater Manager with administration of the city’s Storm Water Control Ordinance; Reading & review of engineering plans, survey plats and tax maps; Assist in the investigation of dry weather run-off; industrial, commercial, construction, residential stormwater quality; water quality issues; and violations of stormwater regulations; Conduct site inspections to review existing conditions and recommend solutions and/or mitigation measures for drainage problems; Provide assistance with the city’s storm water education program; review of the city’s Best Management Practices (BMPs); review/preparation of material for educational and training; Collect field survey data with city’s GPS unit, tape measure, etc.; Use of Microsoft Office products for data manipulation and presentation; Perform administrative tasks such as organizing, filing, pick-up/delivering and other tasks as directed.
  • GIS Intern: Reading & review of engineering plans, survey plats and tax maps; Input data for water main break cards, as-built plan info, street & utility info, etc; Collect field data via the use of the City’s GPS unit, tape measure, etc; download data onto the city GIS server for processing; Utilize ESRI ArcMAP/ArcGIS software to edit property parcels and utility features for the city’s GIS; Use of Microsoft Office products for data manipulation and presentation; Perform administrative tasks such as organizing, filing, delivering and other tasks as directed; Other duties would be performed as assigned.
  • Pretreatment Coordinator: Assist the Wastewater Manager with Pretreatment administration duties, recordkeeping, and sample collection scheduling; Assist the Wastewater Manager and team in ensuring we are following regulatory guidelines and our IUs are compliant; Assist with Industrial Users surveys and spot-checking; Assist with gathering and compiling all Pretreatment files in a dedicated, organized location; Use of Microsoft Office products for data manipulation and presentation; Assist the Wastewater Manager and team, during inspections and monitoring the Industrial Users.

  • Administrative Intern: The position is an administrative entry level, education position which will perform a variety of developmental-level professional administrative work, research, and analysis in support of City Administration. The work performed by the Administrative Intern will have a direct impact on the organization. Typical assignments/projects will involve public relations, civic education programs, internal/external committees, the operating and capital budget, legislative activities and administrative tasks as requested.

GiGi’s Playhouse is a Down syndrome achievement center with the mission to change the way the world views Down syndrome.

  • Marketing Intern: Assist with social media presence; Assist in planning, writing and managing monthly eNewsletter; draft, distribute and pitch news releases, media alerts and other stories; Manage GiGi’s Playhouse Quad Cities Blog
  • Programs Intern: Help oversee group programs when staff is not available. The facilitator will be responsible for greeting families and volunteers, ensuring those in attendance sign in, helping ensure the program runs smoothly and helping set up and/or clean up for the program. Training will be provided. This is a great opportunity for a student interested in education, special education, non-profit programming, and more!

NEST Café’s mission is to nourish bodies and community by providing delicious, sustainably sourced food to all who enter regardless of their means.

  • Nonprofit Experiential Internship: Work in the restaurant where needed (kitchen, serving, set up) 2 shifts/week. Help with data collection and entry of produce donations.  Help convey information regarding our farmers, nutrition, and sustainable practices.  General outreach to the community.  Help in NEST Café’s garden caring for plants and transporting produce to NEST.

Renew Moline is the non-profit economic development entity planning for the future; facilitating development; connecting resources and people; and advocating for public policies and programs in order to realize opportunities for continued investment in and repositioning of Moline, Illinois’ riverfront into the place to live, work, play and learn.

  • Moline Centre GIS Program: We are looking for an intern to document the condition of sidewalks in downtown Moline using GIS technology and a drone. The intern will assist in creating a map of downtown sidewalks in sections with photos from above using a drone, and then assessing and documenting the condition. There are other similar documenting projects that could be undertaken if time allows. Guidance on the execution of the project will also come from the City’s GIS department.

Bringing people and plants together in fun and meaningful ways.

  • Education Intern: Assist the education coordinator in day-to-day tasks such as facilitating field trips and day camps, give tours, assist with educational lectures and classes, and help prepare for educational programs. This position is strongly recommended towards fun and bubbly students majoring in education and/or biology, as well as students who have experience working with children, have organizational and communication skills, and/or have museum/botanical garden volunteering/work experience.

  • Education Intern: support the education team as they secure educational opportunities, enrichment opportunities, and career classes for refugees and immigrants. By working closely with the Education Manager, this position will support the common goal of welcoming refugees and supporting their long-term integration through performing essential tasks related to education.
  • Housing Intern: support the housing team in finding affordable and secure housing to newly-arrived refugees. By working closely with the housing manager and warehouse team, this position will support the common goal of welcoming refugees and supporting their long-term integration through performing tasks related to household donations, rental applications, home set ups and warehouse assistance.

  • Education Outreach & Special Projects: Serve as lead PBS Ambassador during summer outreach programs; Provide support for First Book donation program; Assist with social media promotions; Present educational workshops (reading, coding, etc.) based on PBS programs; Assist with the planning and implementation of WQPT events; Represent WQPT in the community at events, festivals, libraries and schools; Assist with the creation of promotional flyers for events; Perform light clerical office work duties; Perform other related duties as assigned by the Educational Outreach and Development Departments
