6 Things That Will Actually Help FUTURE YOU

I came across this article that included a list of Six from the best by Laura Keir, CEO of Protein Works, while catching up on email over spring break, and it really stuck with me.

Her perspective on work, decision-making, and growth is bold. Though I am not sure that every point as written would resonate with recent grads, it sparked some important reflection.

I’ve adapted her ideas slightly with college students in mind. Take a minute to read through; there’s a lot here that applies right now, not just “someday.”

1. Who you are when no one is watching matters.
Your habits, your follow-through, your integrity, those are the things that build trust over time. Do the small things well, even when no one is checking.

2. Be careful what you say yes to.
Overcommitting doesn’t make you impressive, it makes you unreliable. Protect your time and energy so you can actually show up well for what matters most.

3. Skills can be taught. Character can’t.
When you’re applying for jobs or internships, remember: employers are hiring you, not just your resume. Curiosity, effort, and attitude go a long way.

4. Don’t rely only on your own perspective.
Expand your thinking. Read, listen, and learn from people who challenge and inspire you. Mentorship doesn’t always have to be in person.

5. Use tools (including AI) to learn faster.
AI can be a powerful way to explore ideas, practice conversations, and learn from different perspectives. Use it intentionally, as a tool, not a shortcut.

6. Build a life that energizes you, not one you need to escape from.
Work matters, but so do rest, relationships, and well-being. The goal isn’t burnout, it’s finding work that feels meaningful and sustainable over time.
