Gap Year Options: Fellowships and Residencies in Education
Fellowships and Residencies provide structured opportunities to develop specific skills, whether in research, the arts, education, or other fields. These programs often offer mentorship and hands-on experience, helping students gain clarity on their future career paths.
Academy for Urban School Leadership (AUSL): Chicago Teacher Residency (CTR) is a one-year teacher training program designed for talented, committed professionals who passionately believe that all students deserve a quality education. Individuals who join the program obtain a master’s degree from DePaul University and obtain in-classroom experience with guidance from expert coaches and mentors.
Aspire Teacher Residency Program: A comprehensive four-year California-based teacher training program that integrates exceptional academic preparation and practical teaching experience. Residents receive tuition-reimbursed California Preliminary Credential, a tuition-reimbursed Master’s in Education from the University of the Pacific, and priority hiring at an Aspire school in California or Memphis, TN for Residents who successfully complete the first year program.
Boettcher Teacher Program: The PEBC Teacher Residency program prepares you for an exceptional career as an early childhood, elementary, special education, or secondary teacher through a hands-on licensure program.
Boston Teacher Residency: BTR combines a yearlong classroom apprenticeship with targeted master’s level coursework to provide you with the hands-on experience, feedback, evaluation and ongoing post-graduate support critical to a successful career in teaching.
Capital Teaching Residency: The Capital Teaching Residency trains new teachers to maximize their impact inside early childhood, elementary, middle and high school classrooms at KIPP DC Public Schools
City on a Hill Teaching Fellows: The Teaching Fellows Program is designed to nurture and grow the next generation of City on a Hill teachers with an explicit focus on recruiting educators who reflect the diversity of City on a Hill’s student body. Teaching Fellows are trained and mentored throughout the one-year program (beginning in mid-August) by veteran City on a Hill teachers.
Indianapolis Teaching Fellows: Indianapolis Teaching Fellows partners with more than 45 district and chart school partners in greater Indianapolis to provide exceptional educators for local students. Fellows receive in-depth coaching, grounded in research and evidence-based practices that impact teacher practice and increase student achievement.
Memphis Teacher Residency: Memphis Teacher Residency (MTR) is a faith-based, non-profit organization founded in 2009 to recruit, train, and support effective teachers in a Christian context. Residents are college graduates invited to train with a mentor teacher, receive coaching, and participate in a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) coursework through Christian Brothers University (tuition provided).
The University of Chicago Urban Teacher education Program: The UChicago Urban Teacher Education Program is a residency program that includes a two-year Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree followed by post-graduation mentorship and support for alumni in Chicago.
City Teaching Alliance: You’ll receive a master’s degree from our higher education partner and become dually certified to teach in either elementary education, secondary English or secondary math, and special education. With us, you’ll get more comprehensive coursework and personalized support than any other teacher training program.
