Position Summary
This position exists to ensure proper accounting for financial transactions and accurate fiscal reporting, as well as providing useful financial, statistical, and analytical information to internal and external users of information. In addition, this position ensures integrity and a positive image for the College and the department by building and maintaining effective relationships, communication and cooperation both internally and externally. Each Accountant is responsible for performing multiple duties related to the accounting functions of the College within established deadlines. These duties may include, but are not limited to, responsibility for daily general ledger transactions related to various funds and accounting functions of the College; performing month and year end closing procedures as well as the related workpapers and reconciliations; preparation of year end audit work papers and financial statements; maintaining effective communication both internally and externally, preparation of complex financial and statistical reports; and examining, analyzing, and interpreting records for the purpose of giving advice and/or preparing reports. This position may have the primary responsibility for the College’s Accounts Receivable process or may serve as a backup for this function. This position also works with the Director of Accounting to develop, streamline, and/or upgrade accounting functions, procedures and internal controls within the finance/accounting operating goals, objectives and procedures.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting OR Associates degree in Accounting with 5 years of experience OR Bachelors in a business related field with 7 years of experience. - Over one year of relevant work experience, excluding internship experience, in the accounting field, including responsibility for general ledger transactions and account reconciliations
- A demonstrated proficiency, at the intermediate level, with MS Excel, and at the basic level with MS Word, as well as the ability to utilize complex accounting microcomputer programs.
Additional Desirable Qualifications
- Five or more years related work experience in the accounting field.
- Two or more years of audit experience in a public accounting firm.
- Experience with financial statement preparation.
- Experience with fund accounting.
- Grant reporting and billing experience.
- Experience in an educational institution.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
With or without accommodation, the employee in this position needs to stand, walk and stoop, kneel or crouch less than one third of the time. It is necessary to be able to sit, talk, hear and use hands/fingers to handle or feel over two thirds of the time. It is also essential to carry up to 10 pounds under one third of the time. The employee must, with or without accommodation, have the ability to see at close distances and be able to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.
This position works in a normal office environment but is occasionally exposed to moving parts and loud noise from the check folding machine.
The minimum reasoning skills necessary for this position include the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
The minimum language skills necessary for this position include the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. The person must also have the ability to write routine reports and correspondence and be able to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
The minimum mathematical skills necessary for this position include the ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages. The person must also have the ability to apply concepts of basic algebra.
