HANA Center (HANA) is a Chicago-area non-profit organization working to meet the critical needs of Korean, Asian American, and multiethnic immigrant communities and build power toward systemic change. HANA has offices in Chicago and Prospect Heights, Illinois.
HANA Center’s Education & Workforce Empowerment (EWE) program equips English-language learning Korean and multiethnic immigrant community members with the education, tools, and resources toward developing core skills and actualizing their goals, including naturalization, enrollment in continued education, and employment in safe, living wage jobs. Outreach to HANA’s community is a critical aspect of the EWE program, including engagement of instructors, volunteers, businesses, and interns.
The Communication Specialist Intern will manage all external communications for the Workforce Empowerment program, focusing on developing meaningful relationships with local employer networks as well as continued engagement of post-program participants by 1) establishing new employer relationships and maintaining pre-existing relationships with employers via a monthly newsletter and 2) building a community of current and alumni participants through the department facebook group.
This is a temporary position, from June 15, 2020 – August 7, 2020.
Major Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a communication strategy that includes marketing materials, media outreach and social media content creation;
- Create a standardized employer communication toolkit that is culturally appropriate and tailored to resources for immigrant job seekers and immigrant owned businesses;
- Seek and establish relationships with new employers and maintain relationships with existing employers through aforementioned strategies and toolkit;
- Research supportive resources as content for monthly newsletters & other communication strategies to maintain relationships and educate businesses on Workers’ Rights, HR best practices, hiring trends, tax benefits and small business COVID relief;
- Successfully recruit employer partners through the development of engaging content and conducting regular pitch meetings to join the employer engagement listserv and to attend partnership meetings;
- Conduct workers’ rights assessments for potential employer partners and onboard them through partnership meetings;
- Create weekly content to build the HANA Center Workforce Empowerment Facebook Alumni group with resources for employment opportunities and economic stability, simultaneously building and maintaining relationships with program participants through the group;
- Maintain relationships with current and potential program participants by maintaining Workforce Empowerment Facebook, Constant Contact, e-mail, and other databases, supporting job seekers to access any resources including and not limited to completing applications for programs and employment;
- Effectively promote HANA Center, it’s programs, campaigns, and mission at community/employer meetings and events;
- Participate in team meetings and brainstorming sessions;
- Support and evaluate results of communication campaigns with the team.
Requirements

- Current undergraduate majoring in Marketing, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or a related field student who will be returning to college as a full-time (12 credit hours) sophomore, junior or senior in the fall of 2021;
- Must attend orientation on June 14, 2021 and a virtual close out celebration event on August 6, 2021.
- Language skills: bilingual Spanish/English or Korean/English;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills;
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and highly reliable;
- Meticulous attention to detail;
- Works well under pressure and meets tight deadlines;
- Highly computer literate with capability in email, MS Office, G-suites, and related communication tools;
- Content writing experience for all media platforms;
- Proven social media and networking expertise;
- Strategic and creative mindset;
- Ability to effectively network with other professionals;
- Ability to anticipate problems and develop contingency plans to deal with them as well as evaluate and implement alternative courses of action.
Reports to: Manager of Workforce Empowerment
Compensation: SALARY. The individual shall receive a $3300 salary distributed bi-weekly in equal amounts for the duration of employment. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. Iowa Campus Compact will provide an in-person orientation and three professional development opportunities to the employee.
