HANA Center is a dynamic organization working to empower the Korean American, Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI), LatinX, and immigrant communities through social services, education, culture, and organizing & advocacy to advance social, economic, and racial justice. HANA’s Education & Workforce Program supports immigrants and other traditionally marginalized community members with access to critical resources, training, and a variety of continuing education opportunities to develop multigenerational capacity-building and wealth. Classes include but are not limited to ESL, job readiness, workers’ rights, digital literacy, and culturally-rooted art.

Major Responsibilities:
The Community Education Social Worker will ensure that students of HANA’s English language tutoring program achieves their educational goals by creating a community of empowered learners and welcoming atmosphere, developing culturally competent lesson ideas, teaching in an individualized or group setting, and coordinating a match with other volunteers, referrals to HANA programs and partner agencies, and evaluation of their growth to help students meet their goals. Core responsibilities include:
- Determine the students’ developmental levels, plan for goals and objectives and provide commensurate instruction, the subject matter to be covered, the procedures to be used, lesson closure and evaluation of student achievement.
- Actively engage students in learning and draw on a variety of resources, including innovative technologies and the students’ own lives, communities and prior knowledge to support these efforts.
- Collaboratively develop curriculum, lesson plans and materials to support community members to be equipped with knowledge, access critical community resources, and develop financial literacy, civic leadership, and other skills.
- Manage and teach the HANA Center senior book club at Heiwa Terrace.
- With support from the Education & Curriculum Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator, aid other volunteer instructors to provide effective instruction to community members and ensure proper documentation of student progress and attendance.
- Monitor student growth by assisting department staff and instructional volunteers with student testing and review sessions.
- Actively engage students, supporting them to navigate registration, set and progressively achieve educational goals, and integrate seamlessly with programs and opportunities across HANA Center.
- Collaborate with teaching team to facilitate classroom environments that are reflective of diverse races, cultures, and languages and effectively support student learning and success.
- Coordinate outreach and recruitment of students and volunteers, in collaboration with Education & Workforce team members.
- Participate in direct advocacy, actively engaging community members in campaigns that advance immigrant protection, support and access to public resources.
- Collaborate and contribute to development of new initiatives, such as field trips, joint organizing actions, or student engagement classes and events.
- Monitor student attendance and enrollment, coordinating with team as needed to follow-up.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Key Qualifications:
- Strong teaching and coaching skills in order to assist community members with achieving their educational goals.
- Experience in curriculum development and educational program delivery or willingness to learn.
- Experience working with culturally, linguistically, and developmentally diverse learners.
- Experience with adult standardized testing tools and assessments or willingness to learn.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, writing, speaking, and organizational skills.
- Excellent written and verbal English, bilingual Korean or Spanish preferred.
- Demonstrated commitment to social, racial, and economic justice.
- Creativity, flexibility, and open-mindedness in approach to community members and programming.
- Excellent time management, organization, and ability to prioritize multiple projects at once.
- Ability to work well independently with minimal supervision and within a team.
