Afterschool Program Tutor/ Mentor for At-Risk Youth (Ages 7–16)
Are you passionate about education and making a difference in the lives of young people? Heart of Hope is seeking dedicated and enthusiastic individuals to join our team as Tutors/Mentors to support our Afterschool Program for At-Risk Youth.
About Heart of Hope
Heart of Hope is a nonprofit organization committed to empowering at-risk youth through education, mentorship, and personal development. Our afterschool program provides children and teens with the academic support they need to succeed and build confidence in their abilities.
Position Overview
As a Tutor/Mentor, your primary role will be to assist children aged 7–16 with their homework in general studies. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in youth education while contributing to meaningful change in the community.
Responsibilities
- Provide one-on-one or small-group homework assistance in subjects such as math, reading, and science.
- Build positive, supportive relationships with program participants.
- Communicate effectively with children, parents, and program staff to ensure successful learning outcomes.
- Collaborate with program staff to coordinate schedules based on the needs of the students and availability.
- Maintain a safe and encouraging learning environment.
Schedule
- Commit to working 1 hour per session, 2–3 times a week, or as needed based on student participation.
- Scheduling will be flexible and coordinated based on the number of children enrolled and availability on both sides.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a college or university (fields related to education, social work, or psychology are preferred).
- Passion for helping youth succeed academically.
- Strong skills in general studies subjects, such as math, reading, and science.
- Excellent communication and patience when working with children.
- Dependable, flexible, and eager to learn.
- Prior experience tutoring or working with youth is a plus but not required.
- A background check is required before hire, including providing fingerprints at the Rock Island Police Department.
Compensation
This is a paid with an hourly wage.
